How to play

Rounds: Both sides plan at the same time. The first round lasts two minutes, then the time grows from 86 seconds to two and a half minutes in the final round. The battle plays out as a film (up to a minute) with scenes for every strike, front and naval battle – and the death toll in red. "Skip" ends the film once both players have pressed it. The ↺ button restarts the game. Press Ready when you are done. When both are ready, or time runs out, the battle plays for both sides.
Fog of war: The enemy is only visible when your intelligence finds it. That can be armies at the front (600 km), radar and ships near your units, satellite images, recon flights, sonar or buoys. Old sightings are shown as faded ghosts marked with the round they were seen.
Intelligence: Level 1 gives one satellite and basic reports. Level 2 (6 LP) gives two satellites, detailed reports and tracking of every missile. Level 3 (9 LP) gives three satellites, real-time intercepts of the enemy's plans and the enemy's LP. The satellite's next photo swath is shown on the globe.
Recon planes: Select the plane, click Recon and then a point. It photographs everything within 350 km of its route, but air defense can shoot it down and enemy radar can detect it.
Overlays: The buttons above the camera row (or 1/2, 0 closes) lay a heat map over the globe. 🎯 Target value shows where a warhead kills the most people in enemy cities. ⚠ My vulnerability shows where your cities are least protected, taking your air defense, ABM, shelters and planned construction into account. Hover over the map for exact figures. 🛡 Enemy defenses (3, requires intelligence level 2) shows the chance your missile is shot down for the selected missile type, based on the enemy defenses you have detected (red rings). Unknown defenses are not shown. 📡 Coverage (4) shows where your sensors see the enemy: the front, radar, ships, buoys and the next satellite image (dashed purple = missile tracking). 🌫 Gaps (5) lays gray fog where you know the least, and clears it where you have coverage, just took photos or recently saw the enemy. At intelligence level 3, 🎯 Target value also shows the three recommended targets: the highest target value with the lowest risk of the missile being shot down.
Building: Click a building and then the globe, or drag it straight from the panel and drop it on the map. While placing it you see its range and whether the spot is valid (green or red ring).
Defense: Air defense is all-round (best against ICBMs, 1,200 km). Missile defense (ABM) shoots down 63% of ICBMs within 2,200 km but is nearly useless against aircraft. Coastal artillery fires on ships within 450 km. Shelters cut deaths in your own cities within 350 km by 45%. Your defensive coverage is shown as colored circles during planning.
Ships can only be built in your own region. Give them a route (up to 5 waypoints) or let them patrol back and forth. Detected ships are automatically fired on by enemy destroyers (600 km) and coastal air defense (350 km). Destroyers also drop depth charges on any submarine within 400 km, detected or not. Patrol boats see far. Sonar buoys can be dropped anywhere at sea and report contacts within 900 km immediately.
DEFCON drops every round. Nuclear weapons unlock at DEFCON 3 with one launch per unit. From DEFCON 2 launches are unlimited, but every weapon has to be loaded.
Missiles: ICBMs and bombers hit in the next battle. They are visible if your radar covers the target or the launch site, or if you have level 2. At level 1 you only see that something was launched. SLBMs and cruise missiles hit immediately.
Victory: The enemy loses 70% of its population, or you have the fewest losses after ten rounds. Captured cities count as lost.
Controls: Drag, swipe with two fingers or hold WASD (or the arrow keys) to rotate. Hold Shift or Q to zoom in and Space or E to zoom out, or pinch and use ⌘/Ctrl+scroll. Double-click to center. With a unit selected, R loads a warhead, F fires and V sets a ship route. Enter runs a route, Backspace removes a waypoint and Esc cancels.
